Bali Driving License FAQ

No, this is not a Bali Driving License or a Tourist Driving License. The International Driving Permit IDOP is in a sense an official translation of a national license.

Yes, an IDP is required.

To legally drive in Bali, you must carry both your national driving license and an International Driving Permit (IDP). Without it, you may face fines or rental refusals.

You risk fines & penalties.

If stopped by police and you don’t have an IDP, you could be fined between IDR 300,000 – 500,000. Many rental companies, at least the professional ones, now refuse service without a valid IDP.

Instant Digital IDP Available.

You can receive a digital IDP within minutes after applying online. A printed version can be shipped to your location worldwide.

Yes, it is valid, bit it is not enough. A national license alone is not valid because it can be in any language, that a police officer might be able to read, or not. This is why an International Driving Permit is required in addition to the National License.

Most travelers who rent a scooter or motorbike in Bali chose a 125cc model. The rental companies will rent you the vehicle without asking for a special motorbike license.

However, your insurance might be stricter with this issue and you might face potential issues with insurance coverage in case of an accident. Because in most countries a car license only entitles to drive motorbikes and scooters up to 50cc or 80 cc. So in their eyes, you might have driven without a valid driving license.

Technically, the police could also not accept a car license and ask for a fine or start to ask questions, The International Driving License is basically a translation of your national license.

In Indonesia there are 3 types of national license for motorbikes:

  • SIM C: Motorcycles up to 250 cc; minimum age requirement is 17 years.
  • SIM C1: Motorcycles between 250 cc and 500 cc; minimum age requirement is 18 years.
  • SIM C2: Motorcycles above 500 cc; minimum age requirement is 19 years.

The SIM A is only for cars with a weight of up to 3500kg.

The absolute majority of tourists renting a scooter of 125cc do not have a special Motorbike License and never had any problems when getting checked by the police. This does not mean, that it is technically correct and legal just because it works, and it does not mean, that for your medical travel insurance at home this is allowed
